How to install Audio Guides to a compatible Garmin device

Download a compressed (zipped) file from this site (e.g. AS City of London.zip)

Uncompress (unzip) this folder to a new folder (e.g. AS City of London)

If you don't know how to uncompress (unzip) files, READ THIS

Now you have two choices - you can install the Audio Guide to the internal memory or onto an SD card

Internal memory:
connect your Garmin device with a USB cable to your PC and copy the *.gpi (e.g. AS London West End.gpi) file from the uncompressed folder to the "garmin/poi" folder on your device.

SD card:
if using a new SD create a folder "garmin" on the SD card first, then create a folder "poi" inside the "garmin" folder. Now copy the *.gpi (e.g. AS London West End.gpi) file from the uncompressed folder to the "garmin/poi" folder.

If after the installation you can select the Audio Guide, but there are no entries (for instance when you select the Guide and then All Categories, but the device displays the line "No Matches Found") or you cannot see the Guides at all, that probably means that you are too far away from the Guide's geographical location (i.e. you are trying to use the London Guide in the USA). To use the guide do the following:

1. Close the antenna
2. Go to "View Map" (you should see "Simulating GPS" at the top of the screen)
3. Use the "-" button to zoom out all the way
4. Move the map so that Great Britain is in the middle of the screen
5. Zoom in so that you can see the outline of the country and the cursor (arrow) is roughly in the centre of of it
6. Press the "Set.Loc" button at the bottom of the screen
7. Press the "Back" button

You should have all the entries in the guide showing now.

How to setup Audio Guides for pedestrian usage

If you installed the Audio Guide to an SD card, the unit will display the following window next time it is switched on: "New data found on card (Cancel or OK)". Press "OK".

The unit will then display the screen saying "Install this data?"(to internal memory) . You don't have to install the data, but you can do so if you have enough free space in your internal memory. Press "NO" if you don't want to copy the Audio Tour into the internal memory.

If you installed the Audio Guide to the internal memory from the start no additional screens will be displayed.

When the unit finished loading, go to "Settings" (Spanner icon), then croll down and tap "Proximity Points" icon

You will see the screen saying "Alerts" and "TourGuide". Tap the blue button next to the "TourGuide". A new screen will be displayed with three options: "Off", "Prompted" and "Auto Play". Select "Off" and press "OK"

Before you go walking

Make sure that your device is fully charged

Make sure that if you travelled from abroad you device has a GPS fix before you set off (it will save you time when you arrive at the starting point of your tour)

How to use Audio Guides

IMPORTANT: you might need to ajust the audio volume to avoid audio distortion.

Go to the Main Screen (showing "Where to?", "View Map" and "Travel Kit" buttons. Tap "Where to?" ->"My Locations"->"Custom POIs"

From the list of Custom POIs select the Audio Guide (e.g."AS London West End"). All audio points in the tour are numbered, and the point nearest to your "Current location" will be listed first (it might or might not be the first point of the tour).

Find (scroll to) the first point of the Audio Tour (e.g. "01-Bridge Street" ) and tap on it. To listen to the commentary tap the "Speaker" button.

You can see where this point is on the map by tapping the "Map" button or you can find your way to this point by tapping the "Go!" button, although we do not recommend using this button because it will take you back to the navigation screen and gettiing back to the Audio Tour is a bit awkward in the current software version.

When you have finished listening to the first story, press the "Back" button and locate the next audio point. By tapping the "Map" button you can see this point and your current position, so you can get from one point to another with ease.

Some of the Audio Tours will also include audio directions to the next point, they have the same name as the current point, but start with DIRNS for "directions" (e.g. if you were listening to "02-Westminster Bridge", the audio directions file will be called "03-DIRNS-Westminster Bridge" and will give directions to the next audio point. The "03-DIRNS-Westminster Bridge" audio point has exactly the same geographical co-ordinates as the "02-Westminster Bridge" audio point.)
